“Why do I need a web designer?”
As I write this in January 2025, the world of website design, that I have worked in for over 25 years, has changed dramatically.
The commercial World Wide Web exploded into life during my university years, and by the time I left with my degree, in 1998, we already had emerging design software, search engines and web browsers.
Want to know more? There is a great article here about the history of website design https://www.webdesignmuseum.org/web-design-history
Technology has evolved radically since the internet began, and web design is now very accessible without any coding skills or IT knowledge.
So, can you design your own website? Absolutely! There are platforms such as WordPress.com, Wix.com, or Squarespace.com where you can create a personal blog or portfolio. These platforms offer templates and easy-to-use tools to help you put a website together. They are a great starting point for new businesses and can be very budget friendly. You put in the time and save on the cost.
Would I use these platforms to design your website? No!
These are entry level platforms. As a professional website designer, I need more control! A drag and drop platform such as WIX is not very search engine friendly, the extra code used to build a “code free” interface, slows down your site and the templates are clumsy.
Let’s ask this question to Google Search
Web design is like any other service. Ask yourself…..
- Would I cut my own hair? No because I haven’t got the training.
- Could I fit my own kitchen? No because I haven’t got the right tools or experience.
- Can I take my own wedding photos? No because I already have an important job on my wedding day!
If you need a website, and you have the time but don’t have the budget, then absolutely start with a website builder tool.
When you’re ready for the next stage, I’m here to design you a professional website, that is bespoke to your business, search engine friendly, accessible and responsive across devices and easy to update.
